KAY L.A. • FEARLESS
The album that made me want to start making my own music seriously was Fearless by Jazmine Sullivan. That album made me feel so intensely. I was eleven and I felt every word, every run, every vocal stack. Listening to Jazmine made me feel so full and inspired, I wanted to sound like her. I was in love with so many artist like Michael Jackson, Brandy, Lauryn Hill, Nicki Minaj but Jazmine touched me the most at the time because I could relate to every word. Fearless was so versatile yet so cohesive all at once. “Bust Your Windows” was so different from “Switch” and it was the coolest thing to me cause I didn’t know that a Black woman could do this super soulful R&B, also have a Pop sound and they both were powerful. I also really attached myself to Jazmine Sullivan because she was the only Black woman in music that I knew of that wasn’t skinny and she had confidence in herself which helped me have confidence in myself when I was insecure about my weight I watched her. Jazmine sparked a fire in me to be as many different versions of myself as I can and understand that I can be true in every form. I can’t skip a song on Fearless ‘til this day and I thank her so much for being one of the many Black women and artists who inspired me to create what I want and look how I want.
