JUST CITY • THANK ME LATER

Me creating music came from pure emotion. I have all these layers to me - so many aspects that make up who I am, so many factors that play into making the character and values I posses, yet I didn’t share them. Writing and being good with words was always my gift, but I never dreamed to pursue it even though my fifth grade teacher told me I’d be a writer. How imma be a writer if I’m tryna be Ray Lewis? But on November 1, 2016 my stepmother died and my perspective on life changed. I needed an outlet and music became that. It gave me an escape to express the feelings I couldn’t speak on and a safe place to be vulnerable in a city that preys on vulnerability. Thank Me Later was the first album I listened to in its entirety, so when it was time to make my own music, that’s what I thought of. Drake showed that you can showcase vulnerability while still flexing lyrical skill, and being authentically you in the process. I can relate cause the music I create doesn’t really fit in to what people like here, but it makes me who I am and I won’t confirm. I can’t change or be anybody else so I won’t try. I can only be me so that’s who I try to be - Just City.
